ABOUT THE SERIES
Peacock’s award-winning sitcom, We Are Lady Parts, follows the humorous journey of a geeky biochemical engineering Ph.D. student, Amina Hussein, as she joins an all-female British Muslim punk band called “Lady Parts”. Inspired by her own life, Pakistani-American Writer and Director Nida Manzoor created this comedic series in hopes of representing the challenges that many Muslim women face on their journey towards finding their voice, while remaining true to who they are. In a world where Muslim women often don’t feel represented or see themselves on screen, We Are Lady Parts serves as an outlet to reach Muslim women who are facing their own struggles.
The plot of We Are Lady Parts kicks off with the intimidatingly tenacious frontwoman of the band, Saira, setting out to find a lead guitarist for the band in the hopes of finally landing a proper gig. After discovering Amina’s talent and guitar skills, Saira’s heart is set on recruiting her to join the band.
Reluctantly agreeing to join the band, Amina struggles internally with her decision and is torn between two worlds – her love for the band’s punk spirited energy and the judgment she would face from friends who would deem her decision to be inappropriate. We Are Lady Parts provides a realistic portrayal of the struggle Muslim women face to follow their passions, while not compromising on their principles and values. The show also subtly showcases the diversity of Muslim women and the different ways they can practice their religion.
The initial idea for We Are Lady Parts was built out of Nida’s frustration with the way Muslim women were portrayed on screen as oppressed or lacking agency. While writing the series, Nida aspired to use her real life experiences with her siblings as inspiration to create relatable content for Muslim women across the world.
