Lorraine Ali is television critic of the Los Angeles Times. Previously, she was a senior writer for the Calendar section where she covered culture at large, entertainment and American Muslim issues. Ali is an award-winning journalist and Los Angeles native who has written in publications ranging from the New York Times to Rolling Stone and GQ. She was formerly The Times’ music editor and before that, a senior writer and music critic with Newsweek magazine.
She began her career in the 1990s writing for the LA Weekly about local LA music artists. She then became a regular writer with the Los Angeles Times under the editorship of Robert Hilburn. Ali's work was included in Da Capo’s "Best Music Writing 2001." Ali was a senior critic for Rolling Stone and a music columnist for Mademoiselle. She has written for Esquire, SPIN, The Village Voice, Adweek, Entertainment Weekly, Harper’s Bazaar and Option. Ali often appears as an expert voice on television and has been interviewed Oprah, Charlie Rose, CNN, BBC and other televised outlets discussing media, entertainment, culture, and Iraq and American-Muslim issues.
Ali is outspoken about Iraq, the refugee crisis, and President Trump's 2017 travel ban and has published many pieces about these issues. She has also written about the portrayal of Muslims in American media, film and television.
